- How much nicotine is toxic to a dog?
- Nicotine is potent: signs can start around 0.5–1 mg per kg of body weight, become serious around 4 mg/kg, and are potentially fatal past roughly 10 mg/kg. A single cigarette (~9–12 mg) or a swallow of vape e-liquid can be dangerous for a small dog. The calculator estimates the dose from the source.
- Which nicotine products are most dangerous?
- Vape e-liquid and patches by far — they're extremely concentrated, so even a small amount delivers a big dose. Cigarettes, butts (which still hold nicotine), gum, lozenges and the newer pouches are all hazards too. Keep all of them well out of reach.
- How fast does nicotine affect dogs?
- Fast — usually within 15 to 60 minutes. Early signs are drooling, vomiting, agitation and a racing heart; higher doses bring tremors, weakness, an abnormal heart rhythm, seizures and breathing trouble. Because it moves quickly, don't wait and watch.
- What should I do?
- Call your vet or a poison line right away, especially for e-liquid, patches, or a small dog. Vomiting often happens on its own; the vet will decide on further decontamination and supportive care. Bring the packaging so they can see the nicotine strength.
